During this three-part prayer, the monks invite the Sixteen Arhats to teach sentient beings the way to enlightenment. The Arhats are beings
who have attained freedom from the cycle of existence (samsara) by
eliminating the negative qualities leading to the endless cycle of death and rebirth.
The opening offering to the Sixteen Arhats is related to their longevity, and they are often illustrated with long white beards. This prayer requests that all the great lamas take a long life for the benefit of all sentient beings.
In the second segment of the offering to the Sixteen Arhats, the beauty of the Buddha and his posture in meditation are described.
The third part of the prayer forms the conclusion of the formalities. The monks thank the deities for attending and teaching and request them to return to their own realms.
